Some uni work

So the characters that I based on roman gods, are being used to make some animations

well only two at the current time, Vulcan and Pluto

I'm storyboarding their first venture together, which involves a car workshop and a box, here's a taster!

And here's the animatic that I am currently using, may change. But here is some progress!

An idea that I'm working on

So I have some free time in my bust schedule to post some stuff

one being an idea I have that I will definintley storyboard, and fingers crossed be a fully realised animated product!

Anyway all I'll tell you is Orang-utans

The reason being that this might not get made is my uni work and something very top secret that I cannot discuss as of yet...

i also did a superman

and now back to work :)

Tuesday, 2 October 2012

Well it certainly has been a long time since I posted...

... but I've had one hell of a summer (which ended in september)

Anyway let's start of with some drawings that I've done, for second year we are focusing more on character based stuff. So one of our challenges was to come up with 5 pairs of characters that would be opposites.

I do not know why but the first thought that popped into my mind is the Roman Gods. I guess cos they kinda work, they all are opposites in some way or form.

Instead of just drawing the gods, I thought I'd update them, and this what I came up with...

Mars- God of war

Thought it would it would be cool to do Mars as a punk, since anarchy and war go quite well together! The mohican was established from the helmets the romans wore in battle, the big red brush on top, and his attitude towards everything is to cause chaos.

Venus- Goddess of love

To Partner with I thought that love would probably be the answer. Well the romans did pair the two, so I had an opposite straight away. I depicted her as a school girl with quite a sweet temperament. I also decided to give her ginger hair similar to the famous painting.

Apollo- God of the Sun

The first thought that popped into my mind was MOVIE STAR! Just the idea this guy radiated, 'scuse the pun thats about the sun, charisma was something that made him Apollo. That and the idea that fans were like sun worshippers, it all clicked together

Diana- Goddess of the night

Diana is the sister of apollo in roman mythology and is known as the hunter. I thought that the best opposite for a movie star was someone who was a method actress, somebody that rarely interviews but stays in character when playing the role. I also thought she should be strong willed and be able to be quite empowering for people. In this sense she also has some style to her character.

Jupiter - King of the Gods

Now I was skeptical to do jupiter in the modern day. I felt that it seemed to obvious to put his role on earth as a leader. So I went with the idea that he is a mental illness patient, needn't worry I'll explain. He was found wandering the streets crying out to Saturn, The father of Jupiter in roman mythology, that he would kill him. He was then found and taken in where he seems to gain quite a reputation, but still believes he is the fallen king Jupiter.

Juno - Queen of the gods

With Juno being she should be able to have the authority over him. I thought a relationship where the girl would hold the struggle would be an interesting one. I also thought what if the doctor had grown to like his weird quirks too...

Neptune - God of the Sea

I suppose I chose an obvious occupation, naval captain, but i thought the opposite pairing between him and Minerva would be great. He is a retired naval captain, but his life at the high seas had given the best adventures and stories. So now he tries to find the excitement of life back on land in the park or say in the supermarket, which is totally what minerva is not interested in.

Minerva - Goddess of Wisdom

Being a schoolteacher would be too easy of a character, so instead I made her as dull as a post but incredibly intelligent. She is also the type of person that calculates every action before doing so, she never really tries. Both Minerva and Neptune work as she calms him down, and he jumps in to save the day!

Vulcan - The Blacksmith God

Probably my favourite out of the characters have created, he is a mechanic that can fix anything. The only thing he knows is how to fix something. The only fear is when he doesn't, but that has never happened.

Pluto - God of Death

Pluto was meant to be the grim reaper, instead of thinking the character should be pessimistic, I came up with him being destructive. He destroys things for fun, he is similar to Sid from Toy Story blowing things up in the park or burning ants with a magnifying glass. I paired Vulcan and Pluto as anything Pluto touches, Vulcan can repair it in no time.

Those are all of the characters I made for the summer brief, not all the drawings are there as some are not finished which I will put in another post of random drawings. But I do have some doodles to put up...

In class this morning

Several drawing of an orang-utan that I met at a zoo

This was for an idea that our creator would look like the devil, but it didn't seem to work eventually

My scrawny lil arm, for reference

And my new profile pic image

Working on an outside film for university..

Not only was I busy with work for uni, but I also worked on a little film that was for an environmental company.

here's the link
https://vimeo.com/35888931

Me and my mate Jamie worked not the globe spinning parts, i designed the world and he 3-Dified it

also some first year pals Saalaha (http://taslinguini.blogspot.co.uk/?zx=798a9c1657f12cd8) and Becky worked on props.

It was brief but great working on something that doesn't concern the uni world, and certainly a new experience which i look forward to in the future.

oh and here is one of my new ventures...

Gobby the thingamajig

So now that I have finished my first year, and the staff do not want us to leave yet, they have set a challenge for us. They want us to create a short 30 second animation.... in 72 hours.

WHAT!?!?!?!?!

Seems like a huge task after the work we had just completed yesterday, but as Daryl keeps saying.. no rest  for the wicked

but I knew this was coming and had an idea in mind, I thought about John K and how the cartoons he worked on mostly went in for the cheap. They basically spent the most attention to layout in characters poses and used limited animation to get to the next. Which reduces the cost of inbetweening and gets the animated product out quicker.

As disturbing as that was, they used a lot cheats like repeating things and most focusing on key drawings.

which is similar to what I wish to do.

Here's Gobby the Thingamajig, the star of the little film I'm working on, and yer he is gonna be quite similar to a crazy john k character.

So the story goes, he jumps on to the screen and eats a sandwhich, then vomits at the screen. Because he sandwhich looks like this!

See ya friday folks!

BAD EDIT posters

Yep.... it has been a while

but I have been working very hard completing two modules of work which I have now handed in! YES!!!!! And hopefully some of the work will appear on the blog.

But first, I have been designing posters for my buddy Mike and his BAD EDIT event (mentioned in a previous post).

I decided to go all out and draw a bunch just for him, hopefully he picks one. Oh and yes they are mostly strange animals.
